My five-year-old climbed up on my drum-kit stool tonight and reached for my sticks and looked at me with the eyes she inherited from her mother (eyes I can't say no to at all) and asked me this question. I swear, I look at her and I feel twenty years younger. So I sat her on my knee and helped her with some of the rhythms on one of our easier songs. Goddess help me though, she found the cymbals.
I would like to take this moment to apologize to my mother for my years and years and years of noise making. ;-) Sasha, Gods bless her, keeps Excedrin in her purse. (Remind me to steal it out of there. She can't have it anymore.)
I absolutely love the fact that my daughter loves to play the drums. I love that she's five and she understands so much about rhythm and timing. Don't get me wrong as I say the following words: See, it's been twenty years since I had a five-year-old in the house and they have this completely inexhaustible supply of energy. My sincere thank yous go out to my ex wife, who was the one who survived Andrea's ... entire childhood. I never lived through the drumming and noise making or the careening around the house at faster than light speeds. Truthfully, I absolutely hate the fact that I missed out on Andrea's childhood with the touring we did in the early 80's and I am LOVING the fact that Sasha and I are bringing Adry with us on the current tour, but I think I'm going to need sound canceling headphones if she discovers the cymbals again.
