Crushed Souls' debut album is coming out later this year. We've finally finished the studio work, now it's all the bullshit of actually getting an album pressed and released. As a producer, all it really boils down to is a headache. Seriously.
But I digress.
Craig (the big boss man over at Skid Records - he tends to keep his hands in the Time Machine projects) just called.
Him: "Hey, Mike. So, I just got off the phone with the guys from Disturbed. They're hitting the road in the winter for a few weeks and were very interested in having Crushed Souls along for the ride."
Me: "Sweet."
Him: "Remember, you'd be the opening act. Can you handle that?"
I actually had to stop for a minute. Since joining Time Machine when I was seventeen, we've rarely been an opening act for anyone. We've done short sets for festivals, but always been billed as a headliner. Even on last year's tour, when we were out with Metallica for those couple of weeks, we were taking turns taking the stage first but both doing full sets. Then, I started laughing.
Him: "When was the last time you were an opening act, Kid?"
Me: "It might have been the night Jason told me to fly to LA and audition for the band."
Told him I'd check with everyone and of course, I need to talk to Jaz too. When you have four kids under the age of ten in the house, leaving your wife alone with them is just about the worst thing you can do to her. Especially when three of them are five and under. And as this is a side project for me, by contract it takes lower priority to what Time Machine is up to. Lucky for me the guys are 100% behind it.
But this tour could be a blast. We're all friends with each other and to not have the pressure of shouldering the headline would be nice. On the Skid Marks tour this summer, we've got a slot right before Time Machine (which is going to kill my voice let me tell you) but to be able to do it again on something that isn't a festival tour will be so much less stress.
But to have to sit back and THINK about the last time you were an opening act?
Yeah.
Ego check, Mikey. Ego check.
